Tata Consultancy Services runs the largest fresher internship program in the Indian IT services industry — the program is structured into two distinct tracks (Research and Domain) and runs across all five major TCS delivery centres: Hyderabad (Deccan Park, Adibatla and the Synergy Park campuses), Bangalore (Whitefield and Outer Ring Road), Chennai (Siruseri and the new SEZ at Vandalur), Pune (Hinjawadi) and Mumbai (Powai and the Olympia campus). The Research track is the smaller of the two and is run out of TCS Research at the Hyderabad and Pune labs. The work is published-research adjacent — interns contribute to the labs' work on artificial intelligence, distributed systems, applied cryptography, quantum computing simulation, and the various corporate-research initiatives that the company runs (the GenAI / agentic AI focus has expanded substantially since 2023). Research-track interns typically work alongside a researcher with a Ph.D. and a clear publication track record, and the project scope is structured around contributing to a paper, an internal tooling deliverable, or a patent application. The Domain track is the larger of the two and is run across all five delivery centres. The work is delivery-adjacent — interns contribute to ongoing client engagements in TCS's banking and financial services, healthcare and life sciences, manufacturing, retail, and emerging technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP, AI, IoT, Salesforce) practices. Domain-track intern projects are scoped around supporting a specific client deliverable — building a Power BI dashboard for a banking client's compliance reporting, contributing to a Salesforce Apex codebase for a healthcare client's patient-management system, writing test automation in Selenium / Cypress for a retail client's e-commerce platform. The day-to-day during a TCS internship is meaningfully different from a product-company internship. The work is more delivery-oriented and less platform-oriented — the intern is contributing to a client deliverable that has a real production date, a real client stakeholder, and real consequences if the deliverable slips. This is genuinely good for early-career engineering muscle because it forces the intern to think about deadlines, client communication, and the operational realities of enterprise IT. The trade-off is that the technology stack is constrained by what the client uses (which is often older than what an intern would experience at a product company), and the freedom to choose your own approach is meaningfully smaller than at a product-company internship. The technical bar at the application stage is the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT). The NQT is the same test that gates TCS's full-time Ninja and Digital programs and the BPS hiring path; for the Internship Program the same NQT score is used, with the cutoff for the internship interview round set slightly lower than the cutoff for the full-time Digital track. The NQT is a 90-minute test covering numerical ability, verbal ability, reasoning, programming logic and a coding section. Candidates who clear the NQT are invited to a managerial-and-HR interview, usually conducted virtually in the weeks following the test. The internship application is competitive but the volume of intake is large — 2026 cycle intern intake is expected to exceed 5,000 across the five delivery centres.

Responsibilities

Own a scoped intern project on a TCS Research initiative or a client domain engagement. Write Java, Python or domain-specific code (Apex, Power BI DAX, etc.) per the assignment. Document deliverables for the client or research team. Participate in daily standups, weekly reviews and the end-of-internship presentation. Pair with senior TCS engineers and the client's technical team.

Requirements & qualifications

Pursuing B.E / B.Tech / M.Tech / MCA / M.Sc with 2026 or 2027 graduation. Strong aptitude (numerical, verbal, reasoning) — gates TCS NQT score. Working knowledge of one programming language. Strong written and spoken English. Willingness to work in a hybrid model at one of the five TCS delivery centres.
