TCS Business Process Services (BPS) is the operations arm of Tata Consultancy Services and is one of the very few large-scale fresher pipelines in India that openly hires non-engineering graduates — Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, BBA, B.Sc and BCA candidates from the 2025 and 2026 batches. The role is structured as an entry-level Process Associate or Trainee position across voice processes (customer support, helpdesk) and non-voice processes (transaction processing, finance and accounting, claims processing, KYC, mortgage operations, retail back-office). Hyderabad is one of the largest BPS delivery centres for TCS, and the local hiring volumes through 2026 are expected to be higher than the previous cycle on the back of new wins in BFSI and healthcare.

Applications for TCS BPS go exclusively through the TCS NextStep portal at nextstep.tcsapps.com. The first step is to register, complete your profile, upload your resume and choose the BPS track. Once registered, you become eligible for the BPS National Qualifier Test, often abbreviated as BPS-NQT, which TCS conducts every six to eight weeks. The test runs for roughly 90 minutes and covers numerical ability, verbal ability, reasoning, and an essay writing section that is taken seriously — clarity of written English is a core hiring signal for the operations work that follows. Day-to-day work in BPS depends on the client allocation. A typical voice-process day for a banking customer involves logging into the call queue, handling around 50 to 80 inbound calls per shift on issues like card disputes, statement queries, fund transfers and fraud alerts, and updating the case management system after each call. A typical non-voice day for a mortgage operations client involves picking up a queue of loan applications, verifying documents against the client's checklist, raising clarifications with the on-shore team, and closing the case within a service-level agreement that is usually measured in hours, not days. The work is process-heavy by design, but the more attention you pay to the detail, the more interesting it becomes — many associates start designing small process improvements within twelve months and present them at internal Kaizen meetings.

Training at TCS BPS is genuinely structured. The first two to three weeks are domain training — for example, an associate joining a US health-insurance client will spend that time learning HIPAA basics, the client's claim categories, the codes used in the Explanation of Benefits document, and the client's escalation matrix. The next week is shadowing — sitting with a senior associate and watching them handle live work. By week five the associate is on the floor with a reduced target and a buddy reviewing every output. The graduation criteria for moving to full target is a quality score above 95 percent on a sample of cases, which most associates clear within eight weeks. TCS also pays for relevant external certifications — for example, US Mortgage trainees can claim back the SAFE Act exam fee, and BFSI associates can claim back the NISM Series VA fee.

The compensation band is the standard Indian BPS fresher market: roughly INR 2 to 4 lakh per annum on offer depending on process complexity and client, plus a shift allowance for the night windows, provident fund, ESI or private medical, two-way cab transport for night shifts, and subsidised meals at the campus cafeteria. Shift rotation depends on the client geography. US clients run on a 6:30 PM to 3:30 AM IST window, UK clients on a noon to 9 PM window, and APAC and India clients on a daytime window. You can express a geography preference but the firm will allocate based on business need.

The long-term value of TCS BPS is its internal mobility. The Business 4.0 transformation programme inside TCS deliberately blurs the line between BPS and IT services, and the firm openly encourages BPS associates to upskill into IT roles via internal certifications. The most common transition is BPS Associate to RPA developer (year two), where the associate learns UiPath or Automation Anywhere through the iEvolve learning platform and moves laterally to an automation team. Outside TCS, two years of structured BPS experience opens doors at Genpact, Cognizant, Accenture Operations, EXL and the captives of the same banking and insurance clients you will have served from inside TCS.

For candidates preparing for the BPS-NQT, the recommended preparation is roughly four to six weeks. Spend the first two weeks on aptitude practice — Indiabix, R S Aggarwal, and the official TCS NQT mock papers. Spend a third week on essay writing — pick five common topics around current affairs, write 250-word responses, and have someone read them critically for grammar and structure. The fourth week is mock interviews — there are free Saturday sessions on YouTube channels like CareerVidz and CrackJobs that simulate the TCS HR loop closely. Candidates who go in with this preparation clear the loop at a noticeably higher rate than those who treat the test as something they can wing.

Responsibilities

Handle inbound or outbound voice calls or non-voice transactions per client SLA. Log every interaction in the case management system. Meet quality, productivity and CSAT targets. Identify recurring issues and propose process improvements. Escalate per the client's escalation matrix. Participate in client-led training and certifications. Mentor newer associates after the first year.

Bachelor's degree in any discipline — Arts, Commerce, BBA, B.Sc, BCA or B.Tech. 2025 or 2026 passouts preferred. Strong English communication, written and spoken. Comfortable with rotational shifts. Aptitude in numerical and verbal reasoning. Basic MS Office. No prior BPO experience required.
